The Vancouver Park Board has canceled a planned bike lane that would have been built through Kitsilano Beach.
The $2.2-million, 3.5-km bike lane would have connected Hadden Park near the Maritime Museum to Balsam Street near the Kitsilano outdoor pool. However, immense opposition arose with the project due given the bike lane’s route through playing fields and picnic areas.
In November 2013, the project was ‘temporary’ halted due to the submission of a citizen-backed lawsuit over the Hadden Park portion of the route. The proposal to construct a bike lane through the park is said to have violated the trust written in 1928 by Harvey Hadden, the park’s benefactor.
This bike lane route is not to be confused for the Point Grey-Cornwall bike lane that is currently being constructed. The Kitsilano Beach bike lane path would have complemented City Council’s approved in-street bike lane.
